You’re invited to the latest installment in our Global Frontiers series, which brings together movie lovers with people who care about global issues.
On Saturday, April 27 at 5 p.m., we will be screening “After Yang,” a profound study and poetic exploration of what it means to be a family, what it means to be loved, what makes someone human, and what lies beyond our existence in the age of AI.
Written and directed by the South Korean filmmaker Kogonada and starring Colin Farell, the film follows a family’s attempts to repair their android son after he becomes unresponsive, and can no longer assist their adoptive Chinese daughter.
The movie, which delves into themes of memory, death, loss, and humanness. won the Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Film at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and the Best Director award at the 38th Independent Spirit Awards.
For this event, we are delighted to have the American poet and essayist, and the Chair & Associate Professor at the University of Miami Department of English & Creative Writing, Prof. Jaswinder Bolina.
Investigating language, experience, and innovative writing, Prof. Bolina’s poems have been featured in “The Best American Poetry” series and have appeared in “Poetry,” “The New Yorker,” “American Poetry Review,” and other journals. His essays can be found in “The Washington Post,” “The Paris Review,” “Shenandoah” and “Poetry Foundation dot org,” among others.
