SUMMARY:"HOUSEHOLD SAINTS" (1993) WITH DIRECTOR NANCY SAVOCA
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 7 \n7:30 PM – 10:00 PM FREE ADMISSION \nREGISTER FOR FREE TICKETS HERE\nIn celebration of Women’s History Month\, you’re invited to a special 30th anniversary screening of the 1993 comedy-drama “Household Saints” with director Nancy Savoca in attendance! Savoca will participate in a Q&A with the audience following the screening. \nDirector\, screenwriter and producer Nancy Savoca began her career working with Jonathan Demme on “Something Wild” and “Married to the Mob” before making her feature debut with the 1989 indie film “True Love\,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. \nSubsequent work includes “Dogfight” (1991)\, starring River Phoenix; the HBO drama “If These Walls Could Talk” (1996)\, an anthology film about abortion starring Demi Moore\, Sissy Spacek and Cher; and episodes of multiple TV series including “Murder One\,” “Third Watch” and “The Mind of the Married Man.” \n \nHOUSEHOLD SAINTS | 1993 | DIRECTOR: Nancy Savoca | WITH: Tracey Ullman\, Vincent D’Onofrio\, Lili Taylor\, Michael Imperioli\, Illeana Douglas | RUNNING TIME: 2H 4M | RATED R for two scenes of sexuality | KINO LORBER RELEASING | 4K DCP projection \nNancy Savoca’s star-studded indie gem Household Saints is a chronicle of a spirited Italian-American New York family that perfectly balances humor\, tragedy\, and pathos. Joseph Santangelo (Vincent D’Onofrio) is a butcher with a wicked sense of humor who “wins” his wife Catherine (a stellar Tracey Ullman) in a pinochle game. \nOver the protests of his mother (Judith Malina) who talks to ghosts and makes deals with saints\, Joseph marries Catherine. When the old lady dies\, her spirit is channeled into her granddaughter Teresa who yearns to serve God. \nPerfectly embodying a modernday Bernadette\, Lili Taylor imbues Teresa with a mix of dedicated innocence and naïveté. Executive produced by Jonathan Demme\, with memorable performances from Michael Imperioli\, Michael Rispoli and Victor Argo\, Household Saints showcases a unique voice in 1990s independent filmmaking. \nThere will be a reception with light bites and drinks. Admission is free but registration required at link above.

SUMMARY:'THERE'S ALWAYS TOMORROW' (1956) FREE SCREENING AND DISCUSSION
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER FOR FREE TICKETS HERE\nJoin us at 6 p.m. Monday\, Feb 26\, for a free screening of the 1956 drama “There’s Always Tomorrow\,” featuring an introduction by Marsha Gordon\, author of the award-winning “Becoming the Ex-Wife: The Unconventional Life and Forgotten Writings of Ursula Parrott.” \n“There’s Always Tomorrow” is one of ten films adapted from the writings of Ursula Parrott. \nTHERE’S ALWAYS TOMORROW |USA 1956 | DCP | 84 min. | DIRECTOR: Douglas Sirk | WITH: Fred MacMurray\, Barbara Stanwyck\, Joan Bennett \nFeeling neglected by his wife (Barbara Stanwyck) and unappreciated by his children\, a toy manufacturer (Fred MacMurray) is reunited with an old flame (Joan Bennett) who has suddenly dropped into town. This movie offers one of Hollywood’s greatest pairings — MacMurray and Stanwyck — in a distinctly emotionally rich story\, presented through the lens of the great master of melodrama Douglas Sirk. \n \n\nCredited with popularizing the label “ex-wife” in 1929\, Ursula Parrott wrote provocatively about divorcées\, career women\, single mothers\, work-life balance\, and a host of new challenges facing modern women. Her best sellers\, Hollywood film deals\, marriages and divorces\, and run-ins with the law made her a household name. Part biography\, part cultural history\, “Becoming the Ex-Wife” establishes Parrott’s rightful place in twentieth-century American culture\, uncovering her neglected work and keen insights into American women’s lives during a period of immense social change.\n\n\n\n.\n\nMarsha Gordon is Professor of Film Studies at North Carolina State University\, a former Fellow at the National Humanities Center\, and the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar award. She is the author of numerous books and articles and codirector of several short documentaries.\n\n.\n\nA book signing follows the screening. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from Books & Books.\n\n.\n\nSponsored by the Norton Herrick Center for Motion Picture Studies and Books & Books.\n
