SUMMARY:SUNDAYS AT THE U WITH MOVIES: "THE UNTOUCHABLES" (1987)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nJoin us at 1 p.m. Sunday\, October 4th for a screening of “The Untouchables\,” director Brian De Palma’s gripping Prohibition-era crime drama about a team of incorruptible lawmen waging an all-out war against Chicago’s most infamous mob boss. \nAfter building an empire with bootleg alcohol\, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down\, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City’s police force. Recruiting an elite group of lawmen who won’t be swayed by bribes or fear\, including Irish-American cop Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery)\, Ness renews his determination to bring Capone to justice. \nAn enduring classic\, “The Untouchables” captures the gritty\, high-stakes atmosphere of 1930s Chicago. Scripted by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet\, “The Untouchables” is a masterwork of stylish tension\, unforgettable dialogue\, and legendary cinematic set pieces\, anchored by an iconic\, Oscar-winning performance by Sean Connery and Ennio Morricone’s soaring score. \n\n“While overtly melodramatic\, The Untouchables is a perceptive and hard-driven actioner. It’s an intriguing character confrontation\, loaded with ironies\, both personal and social — on one side\, the flamboyantly powerful gangster whose booze smuggling made him a popular hero amid a Prohibition-weary public; on the other side\, a faceless outsider whose straitlaced\, insistent dedication threatened to overturn the town’s well-oiled troughs. \nAs Eliot Ness\, Kevin Costner plays it tight to the vest. Those who recall Robert Stack’s superbly confident portrayal and hail-hearty voice in the TV series may be initially turned off by this interpretation. But to Costner’s considerable credit\, he defers to the staid traits of character throughout; ultimately\, it is these small\, relentlessly Sunday School qualities that make his ultimate victory against the seemingly invincible Capone believable — the tortoise vs. the hare… \nDirector Brian De Palma brings The Untouchables in tight and true\, in the spirit of Ness himself. Unlike Scarface\, no one is likely to claim that this film’s considerable violence is gratuitous. \nTechnical credits\, like the supporting character portrayals\, are well realized and particular. Marilyn Vance’s costumes\, from the luridly vivid gangster regalia to Ness’ Sears-style graywear\, are starkly expressive. Meticulous details\, contrasting further the character consistencies\, are evident throughout in the production design — credit visual consultant Patrizia von Brandenstein for the expressive period nuances. Ennio Morricone’s astringent score\, featuring a harsh and lyrical trumpet blend\, is wonderfully piercing\, the perfect sounds for this well-contrasted film.”— Duane Byrge\, The Hollywood Reporter \nTickets are $6 and available at the link above. SUMMARY:SUNDAYS AT THE U WITH MOVIES: "AMERICAN GRAFFITI" (1973)
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nJoin us at 1 p.m. Sunday\, September 27th for a screening of “American Graffiti\,” director George Lucas’s coming-of-age comedy about a group of small-town teenagers facing crucial turning points on the last night of summer break. \nAn enduring classic\, “American Graffiti” celebrates an America of the early 1960s\, where teenagers cruise the streets in hot rods and rock and roll tops the music charts. Inspired by his youth in the valley town of Modesto\, California\, “American Graffiti” was George Lucas’ second feature film\, and is a masterwork of vibrant colors\, exciting soundtracks\, and endearing characters. A story of coming-of-age\, it remains one of the most successful films in history. \nOver the course of a summer evening\, four teenage friends ponder their futures\, navigating relationships centered around the cruising culture of their sleepy town in California’s San Joaquin valley.  After a madcap series of hilarious encounters\, they each make decisions that will forever change their lives. \n\n  \n“American Graffiti” acts almost as a milestone to show us how far (and in many cases how tragically) we have come. Stanley Kauffmann\, who liked it\, complained in the New Republic that Lucas had made a film more fascinating to the generation now between thirty and forty than it could be for other generations\, older or younger. \nBut it isn’t the age of the characters that matters; it’s the time they inhabited. Whole cultures and societies have passed since 1962. “American Graffiti” is not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie’s success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant. \nOn the surface\, Lucas has made a film that seems almost artless; his teenagers cruise Main Street and stop at Mel’s Drive-In and listen to Wolfman Jack on the radio and neck and lay rubber and almost convince themselves their moment will last forever. But the film’s buried structure shows an innocence in the process of being lost\, and as its symbol Lucas provides the elusive blonde in the white Thunderbird — the vision of beauty always glimpsed at the next intersection\, the end of the next street… George Lucas knows that for one brief afternoon of American history angels drove Thunderbirds and could possibly be found at Mel’s Drive-In tonight… or maybe tomorrow night\, or the night after.” – Roger Ebert \nTickets are $5 and available at the link above. SUMMARY:MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL: “AV CLUB'S 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF MDPLS' 16MM SHORT FILM COLLECTION ”
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nThe Miami Film Festival presents “AV Club’s 70th Anniversary of MDPLS’ 16mm Short Film Collection” at 12:00 p.m. Sunday\, April 19th. \nFeaturing films with a Miami connection\, this screening of five short films celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s 16mm Film Collection. \nFeatured films are: \n“Fantasy Fling”: The disco phenomenon in America is documented in this cinema verité style. Using a popular disco in Columbus\, Ohio\, as a typical example\, the film moves from a disco dance class to people dressing up for an evening to the final energies of people in the thrall of hypnotic music. This wildly acclaimed documentary aired on PBS and RAI\, (Italy) television networks and was screened at numerous film festivals like the Athens International Film Festival where it won Best Social Documentary. The story is cheeky and sexy and a fascinating chronicle of the time. The narrative is structured between the gay and straight perspective of this cultural and social episode in the late 1970’s. \n“Fabricollage”: Florida artist Evelyn Marx tells of her creative thought processes and techniques as she works on fabricollage in her studio. Eleven of her creations are explored and interrelated. \n“Florida Everglades”: The Florida Everglades\, a unique ecological region which is totally dependent upon water\, is shown with special attention to the animals and unusual flora. The area is also the scene of an unresolved struggle between the needs of man and the needs of nature. The film pleads for its preservation. \n“Function”: Made by a Miami filmmaker Larry Kleinman\, this is a startling suspense drama on the future and ecology. A story about two boys who are on their way to see a tree in a museum\, showing that their behavior is indicative of their environment. Set in the near future which is insulated from the polluted outside world and which is run by computers. \n“Magnetic Telescope”: An animated Superman adventure made in Miami. A scientist’s experiment with a magnetic telescope causes a huge comet to fall to the earth. Even Superman has a hard time with this crisis! \n \nTickets are free with registration.
